Irene died after suffering a stroke on November 22, 2017 at the age of 91. She was born on July 27, 1926 on the family farm to Thomas and Monika Chicos. As a young child, Irene enjoyed school immensely and graduated from Freeborn High School in 1943. She pursued teacher training in Wells and Mankato and subsequently taught in many one room country schools in the area. On July 14, 1949 Irene married Hubert Lust at All Saints Catholic Church. They lived in Matawan where Irene taught school until the birth of their first child. In 1961, the Lust family moved to New Richland where Irene and Hubert raised their children. It was very important to Irene to be a good homemaker and mother. She learned about nutrition and healthy living for her family and made sure her children received a good education.
Irene enjoyed many activities. She planned a vegetable garden each spring. She loved attending social events, watching sports on TV, listening to music, and baking and eating delicious desserts. She especially enjoyed reminiscing with her siblings about the olden days as she fondly referred to them. Her faith was a center point in Irene’s life. She was an active member of All Saints Parish and enjoyed participating in parish events. Irene lived in her home in New Richland until her death.
Irene is survived by her four children, Sister Jeanne Marie Lust O.S.B. of St. Joseph, MN, Katherine Lust of Minneapolis, Gary Lust of New Richland, and Lisa Lust of Plymouth, MN; her brothers, Thomas (Ruth) Chicos and Francis (Eileen) Chicos; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert; her parents; brothers, Sylvester and Charles Chicos; and sisters, Angeline Kent and Margaret Chicos. Irene will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
