Gladys I. Battenfeld of New Richland died early in the morning on Monday, December 05, 2016 at the New Richland Care Center. She was 99 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 8, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Richland. Reverend Scott Williams will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery, rural New Richland.
Gladys was born on August 12, 1917 in Stratford, Iowa to parents John and Freda (West) Mogenson. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in New Richland and was an active lifelong member. She attended a country school just east of New Richland through eighth grade.
Gladys married her husband Fred Battenfeld on October 15, 1934 at Grace Lutheran Church in Waseca.
They made their home on a farm northwest of New Richland from 1947 to 1965 and then in Hartland until 1993. She was a homemaker, helping to raise 5 children. She also spent 15 years working housekeeping at St. John’s Lutheran Home. In her free time, Gladys enjoyed reading and spending quality time with family and friends. Gladys and Fred also enjoyed traveling, making it to all 50 states! She spent her final years in New Richland.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fred; sons, Russell Battenfeld and Edward Battenfeld; grandchildren, Bradley Battenfeld and Linda Battenfeld-Spooner; daughters-in-law, Carol Battenfeld and Lou Battenfeld; and siblings, Harry, Clarence, Ardella, John, and Richard.
Survivors include her children, Constance ‘Connie’ (Francis) Mucha, Bob Battenfeld (special friend Eleanor Schlaak), Martin Battenfeld; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Myra Battenfeld and Betty Battenfeld.
