On the last day of school, the students in Jenny Stoesz’s Precalculus class finally got word that they are the 2014-2015 Minnesota State TrigStar Champions.

Sixteen schools from around the state participated in the trigonometry contest that awards scholarships and prizes at the local, state, and national level. The NRHEG team won the local contest in Mankato on March 13 with the highest overall local team average score on the one hour, one hundred point exam. The state title is awarded to the school with the highest cumulative point total of the top 10 team members. NRHEG will receive the engraved state traveling trophy to display in school next year.

Individually, there were 250 students who participated in the TrigStar competition statewide.

NRHEG students Eli Lutgens and Torrie Stencel, finished second and third in the state rankings, respectively. For his second-place finish, Eli will receive $250 and a silver medal. Torrie will receive $200 and a bronze medal. The first-place winner from each state moves onto the national competition. Congratulations to all of the TrigStar team members on their state title!

They say time flies when you’re having fun. That’s certainly been the case for Russel and Delores Rosenau, who hit their milestone 70th wedding anniversary on June 9.

“It’s been a long time,” said Delores of her 70-year marriage, “but when you stop to think about it, it doesn’t seem like it’s been that long.”

The couple was married in 1945, in a double-wedding ceremony along with Delores’ sister Jane and Victor Kluenoer.

“It was unheard of at the time,” said their daughter, Ramona.

“When our father found out both daughters were getting married, he said ‘we’ll do one pig, one wedding, and that’s it,” said Delores.

The NRHEG School District’s $14.5 millon bond referedum failed in a district-wide vote Tuesday, June 9.

With a little more than 1,000 votes cast, 34 percent voted yes and 66 percent voted no.

The Freeborn County Historical Society is presenting Eddie Cochran Weekend June 12 and 13. Come and join them all day for the 29th Annual Car Show in downtown Albert Lea on North Broadway. On Friday, June 12 there will be a Cruise-In Social that starts at 6 p.m. sponsored by The Green Mill, Country Inn and Suites, and Motor Inn, Co. Join them at The Green Mill on East Main in Albert Lea. The Freeborn County Museum will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Museum’s “World Famous” root beer floats will be available at the Cruise-In.

There will be a community volunteer work day at the former Hotel Washburn building — future home of the Area Food Shelf of New Richland and the New Richland Area Historical Society — Saturday, June 13 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Plans are to move lumber, drywall, insulation, some cabinets and do some scraping around windows.
