New Richland City Council

Due to the increased wages of nearly all city employees included in the proposed 2018 budget, the New Richland Ambulance requested an hourly rate increase for its members during the first city council meeting of the month on Monday, Nov. 13. Ambulance members are currently paid $1.50/hour on weekdays and $2/hour on weekends and holidays. The request is for $3/hour on weekdays, $4/hour weekends, and continuance of $20 per run. The council agreed to table the issue for further consideration before making a decision.
The ambulance report also stated that there were 18 runs in October and have been seven so far this month, bringing the total number of runs for the year to 168. Another item was reported missing from the rig, as well. The ambulance report was approved.
The police report stated that the NRPD responded to 127 calls in October. Six interviews were conducted for an open part-time officer position, followed by two interviews with the highest scoring applicants. Background checks are being done on the two individuals.
Purchase requests for two winter tires for the squad car at a cost of up to $500 and three new tasers at a cost of $4.592.51 were approved. The report was approved.

Ellendale City Council

At the Nov. 9 meeting of the Ellendale city council, there was a member of the community present who has done research as to the possible limits according to city ordinance for an expanded garage on his property. Having presented the council with maps, delineating his plans, he wanted to know the proceedings for submitting a variance request. According to the council, there must be a meeting with the members of the community who will be affected – those within 300 feet of the property.
There have been some complaints that Steele County deputies are either watching the Municipal Liquor Store, or following patrons home on their way from the Muni. Likewise, there have been complaints about “prolonged parking” by police officers near the maintenance building. According to Sheriff Lon Thiele, who was present at the meeting, patrons may believe the officers are watching the Muni because of the liquor store’s proximity to the maintenance building, where they stop to use the restroom. He said his biggest concern was that the deputies are not posting themselves in front of the bar. He asked that someone let him know of problems immediately, so that they can be addressed. Complaints about past occurrences can no longer be resolved.

The NRHEG High School Alumni Boys’ Basketball Game is set for Friday, Nov. 24. Doors open at 6 p.m. with 6:30 p.m. tip-off.
Admission is $3 for ages 5 and up. Concessions will be available.

Team Geneva would like to invite everyone to the Geneva City Park on Saturday, Nov. 25 from 6-8 p.m. to celebrate the inaugural Lighting of the Holiday Lights.
In recent years, Team Geneva has been collecting donations for holiday decorations and would like everyone in the community to share in the excitement of the completion of this project.
The lighting of the Christmas tree and snowflakes will occur at 7 p.m. Santa will also be making a stop to visit the kids in our community.

The NRHEG High School band will perform its annual Indoor Concert Nov. 20 and 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium in New Richland.
This year’s theme is “America,” keeping with the theme of the summer marching show, “The American Vision.”
After the Tuesday performance, awards will be given out and the new junior drum major will be announced.
Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for students, and free for kindergarten and younger.
