It’s official. Minnesotans know who they will be voting for in November. Namely the winners of the DFL and GOP primaries on Tuesday, August 14. There were many exciting races and people were unsure of the favorites on either side of the aisle in many races.

The GOP race was between former governor Tim Pawlenty and newcomer Jeff Johnson, the GOP endorsed candidate in the race. Pawlenty was running on his record, more specifically, how his record this time around would be better. Johnson ran with the endorsement and spoke glowingly about his admiration for President Donald Trump. The primary voters gave a clear and powerful message: they didn’t want any more of the old guard. They were ready for a change and they felt Johnson was the best candidate. With 52% of the vote and 168,000 votes, Johnson will be the GOP nominee on the ballot in November.

The pews were filled to overflowing on Sunday, Aug. 19 as Vista Lutheran Church celebrated their 160th anniversary. Chairs were placed in the nursery and the foyer, and still more people came from far and wide to attend the two-hour long celebration of this congregation’s commitment to serving God and one another.

Pastor Brian Gegel presided over the service, expressing his gratitude for the many people who gave of their time and talents to make this event a success. He also read a message of congratulations from their brothers and sisters in Christ at Vista Evangelical Covenant Church, and said that a similar congratulatory message had come from LeSueur River Lutheran Church.

The first National Night Out  was organized in 1984 as a day to encourage residents to get out in the community and hold “block parties.” It has since become a great way for people to get to know and thank the community fire departments, ambulance crews, and Skywarn and law enforcement officers. Residents of Geneva and Ellendale gathered to enjoy a summer night out.

The ice cream social, held in the Geneva City Park from 5-7 p.m. on August 7, was sponsored by Team Geneva and the Geneva Business Club. Flyers inviting the public to enjoy hot dogs and ice cream were posted and delivered around town.

Kids enjoyed the playground equipment at the park, as well as meeting the fire fighters and seeing the inside of the fire trucks and ambulance. Team Geneva and various local businesses were on hand to help serve roughly 120 guests in attendance.

The 16th Annual Freeborn County Relay for Life Celebration Ceremony got underway at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds. Dr. Gordy Klatt wanted to make a difference in the fight against cancer and started Relay for Life 33 years ago in Tacoma, Washington. Relay for Life has now become a worldwide movement with events all over the United States.

In Albert Lea, people registered for the relay and picked up their assigned 2018 Relay for Life T-shirts,  for either survivor or caregiver. Those who were cancer survivors signed survivor luminary bags that were displayed in the Garden of Hope during the relay.

As the 65th Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice approached on July 27 this year, a group at the American Legion and VFW in Blooming Prairie felt it was time to bring to remembrance the "forgotten war" of the 20th Century. The Korean War began back in the spring of 1950 and continued on until July 27, 1953.

Commander Karl Luiken of the Blooming Prairie American Legion Post 52 was recently approached by a group of Korean War veterans, who had concerns about some of the misconceptions about the war and the people who served in it. Karl decided to research this "forgotten war."

Karl learned a great deal, and he felt that it was time that veterans in our area be recognized for their service to their country during the Korean War.

The Blooming Prairie American Legion and VFW hosted a special Korean War Veterans program on Friday night, July 27, an event that honored a number of area veterans.
