You’re probably used to seeing Lonnie Wilson on the football field, basketball court, or track.
This month, though, he’s being recognized for something different, music. Mrs. Fredrickson nominated him for Student of the Month for his singing ability. He joins Grace Kofstad, nominated by Mr. Otstot of the Music Dept., as NRHEG High School’s Students of the Month for November.
Wilson was selected Student of the Month because of his involvement in choir and his singing ability. Football, basketball, track and field and choir have been his high school activities.
A Panther since kindergarten, Wilson said his favorite memories at NRHEG have been going to state for basketball and football, and being a part of the Homecoming court.
“Another good memory is when we moved into our new home after our last one burnt down,” said Wilson, who works as a cashier at Casey’s in Ellendale.
Although he’s applied to a couple colleges, Wilson’s future plans are still up in the air.
In his free time, Wilson enjoys watching Netflix, playing sports, making “tik toks,” and hanging with friends. He’s the oldest of four siblings.
What would you find surprising about Wilson?
“I can make some ‘smackin’’ French toast,” he said.
Wilson’s words of advice for underclassmen are brief: “Sunglasses are key!”
Kofstad was nominated by Otstot because, “She is a hard worker and a strong leader within the band. She has a high standard for herself and others. She does a good job helping others achieve this standard. She has helped make our band better now and in the future.”
In addition to being in Marching Band and serving as Concert Band Drumline Captain, Kofstad has been involved in fall and performance cheerleading, National Honor Society, student council and Knowledge Bowl.
Attending NRHEG all her school years, Kofstad’s top memories are taking a band trip to San Diego and bonding with members of the cheer team.
Kofstad, who worked last summer as a cashier at HyVee, plans to attend either the University of Texas or the University of Colorado to study agriculture.
“I enjoy hiking and traveling,” said Kofstad. “One of my favorite things is driving around and admiring different houses, especially in the Cities! Band and cheerleading are extremely important to me, and I hope to continue doing either of them in college.”
Kofstad said that, although she often procrastinates, she still manages to complete all the work by the due date.
Her words of advice for underclassmen?
“Join a team or club that might be out of your comfort zone. It may surprise you how much fun it can be!”
