Last year, the sun was shining and the temperatures were in the mid-40s as people gathered under the big top. This year the temperatures were in the mid-20s as a great deal of wet, heavy snow fell druing the 34th Annual Wild Game Feed.
Downtown Geneva was packed with cars almost all the way to the city pool, on Saturday Dec. 1.
The heavy snow caused problems. The tent began to sag a bit as mid-afternoon arrived, and little moist droplets of water could be felt dropping from the tent as people made their way around the event.
It takes a lot of work getting an event of this size organized and ready each year. It can’t be accomplished alone and the organizers continue to be thankful for everyone who turns out to lend a helping hand.
The tent was filled with about 50 picnic tables where people sat and enjoyed the wild game that was donated and prepared.
A stage area was used for the gun raffle. An enclosed walkway was also developed to provide an area where people could travel between the indoors and the outdoor tent, which was especially important on Saturday due to the weather conditions.
Earlier in the week preparation began. Over the years they have developed a great variety of ways to prepare the assortment of wild game they receive. This year’s event included a great assortment of wild game including venison, elk, and assorted fish.
At about 11 on Saturday morning people started making their way down the serving tables. Small cards were placed next to each of the warming trays and roasters identifying the type of game they contained.
Attendees were encouraged to make a free-will donation for the fight against cancer.
People came from all over to attend this year’s event. Richard Grunwald, a former resident of the area, came from Surprise, Arizona.
Jason Tieskotter served as announcer this year and he kept things moving along with the gun raffle. A total of 74 guns, and one bow, were included in the event.
Brenda Misgen was in charge of organizing the ticket girls again this year.
A great list of thank yous were extended to everyone who helped make this event successful as well as to Chelsey and Greg Hanson and their crew at Geneva Bar & Grill.
From all indications, it was a great day in Geneva.
