Despite the bitter weather, all members were present at the Tuesday, Jan. 3 annual Organizational Meeting of the NRHEG Board of Education — including new members-elect Dan Schmidt, Karen Flatness, and Neil Schlaak.
Board chair Rick Schultz called the meeting to order, and the new members were sworn in.
Rick Schultz was unanimously re-elected as Chairman, and JoAnn Maloney was elected Vice-Chair, replacing departed member Michele Moxon.
Neil Schlaak nominated Travis Routh as clerk.
Routh expressed some insecurity about his qualifications for the job.
Supt. Dale Carlson informed the board that the offices of Clerk and Treasurer, while they were laborious jobs, could be partly done by assistants. Thereupon Karen Flatness was also nominated, and after Routh commented “Her penmanship is almost certainly better than mine,” Schlaak withdrew his nomination and Flatness was elected unanimously. Routh was elected Treasurer.
Committee members were appointed:
Finance - Flatness, Maloney, Routh. Policy - Maloney, Schmidt, Schultz. Building and Grounds: Routh, Schlaak, Schultz. Transportation: Flatness, Schlaak, Tollefson. School Activities: Routh, Schmidt, Tollefson. Paras: Maloney, Routh, Schmidt. AFSCME: Flatness, Schlaak, Schultz. Certified Staff:Maloney, Schlaak, Tollefson.
Depositories (State Bank of New Richland), official newspaper (Star Eagle), and regular board meeting dates, times and compensation were declared same as last year.
Schultz presented the summary of the Supt. mid-year performance review, which concluded Supt. Carlson either met or exceeded all specified goals. Member Mike Tollefson expressed dissatisfaction with the summary. “I don’t disagree with the results, but I don’t feel the summary reflects the discussion we had.” It was agreed that Schultz and Tollefson would go over the material again.
The year’s first regular meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 17 at the Ellendale Media Center, 6:30 p.m.
