To me the most pretty birds in the spring are: Yellow Finch, Red Finch, and Rooster Pheasants. (Not necessarily in that order). The dullest looking are crows of which we feed the year around. (I refer to at least two of them as my pets, as whenever they see me outside the caw, cawing starts.)
The most interesting to watch are hummingbirds – especially when they are fighting for the juice in the feeder. We put out two feeders of juice. I found their nest that blew down one year – a U.S. quarter fit very snug in the bottom of the nest!!
We have tulips on the south side of the house and on the west side of the house. Because of the warm spring plus sun, the tulips on the south side of the house were blossoming by the 15th of April. We received an inch and a half of rain on the 16th of April. This caused the tulips to be in full bloom. What is so unusual is that all of the blooms are red except for one yellow-white tulip.
The tulips on the west side of the house haven't started to blossom – must be because of the sun plus the rain came from the south.
The weather turned cold the day after all the rain (even a light frost two nights in a row.) This has caused the tulips on the west side of the house to halt all blossoming. (Rumor has it – this caused the Awesome Blossom girls from Blooming Prairie to don slacks for a few days.)
Once again Genie and I are going to honor the “No Mow May” as requested by some naturalists. They claim it will help many critters to re-produce their species. (I will accept the good with the bad – namely more dandelions.)
How about this local promotion? While ordering at a local restaurant you will be asked to pay with a credit card only. If you agree to shut off your cell phone plus any other cell phones by others with you – dessert is free of charge to all.
If you don't agree to shut off all cell phones, you will be asked to leave.
If you agree to shut off all cell phones but don't; your credit charge will show up on your next credit card billing after you have been asked to leave with your food order, given to you as take out.
Genie and I aren't certain if this is a good promotion or not. It may drive away credit card users in the younger generation with cell phones. It may bring in other customers who believe the meal is to be enjoyed with people, not with a cell phone!
Time for “six” true-false statements. You decide:
1. The April full moon occurred on the 23rd of April 2024.
2. The May full moon will occur on the 23rd of May 2024.
3. Many fishermen use an orange to test how sharp the hooks are they are using when fishing.
4. Pat Sajek, host of the TV show Wheel of Fortune, wears a wig.
5. There is a one room school with one teacher in the state of Minnesota.
6. Of the six only one of the six is true.
By the way, do you know what the title is of this column??
