This will be a running-of-the-words column in the form of short shorts:

A. I attended the benefit for Brooklyn Kaye at the Aragon Bar in Albert Lea. I was most impressed with the arrangement.

B. The Minnesota DNR threw Genie and I a curve ball, causing us to strike out. We had planned on walleye fishing in the a.m. with cousins Thorvald and Thelma Hanson, who live on the shore of Lake Mille Lacs near Garrison, Minn. We had planned on fishing in the a.m. and hunting in the p.m. The DNR closed open-water fishing for walleye on Mille Lacs. Thus, Genie and I plan on deer hunting both a.m. and p.m. on the west side of Lake Winnibigosish at Bena, Minn.

C. An old crusty well-known resident of Albert Lea was asked when she planned on retiring. Her answer: “Four days before my funeral.

D. The hospital auxiliary in Albert Lea is holding a $6 sale in the lower rotunda of Mayo Clinic in Albert Lea on Wednesday the 20th and Thursday the 21st of November. Yes, you read it right, the sale is $6.

E. Genie asked if she could write about her bus trip through Four Seasons of Albert Lea to Noah’s Ark in Kentucky. I gladly said, “Yes.” There is an old southern saying that made me say yes. I want all the male readers to be aware of the saying, “If Mama ain’t happy, nobody’s happy.” Genie will be writing about her trip in a future column.

F. I am convinced the toughest and last flowers to freeze are mums. Along the same line, red oak and purple maple are the last trees to drop their leaves.

G. In humans, Norwegian men are the first to don long johns and the last to take them off (June, July and August are Fruit-of-the-Loom months).

H. Indian summer is supposed to start after a killing frost in the mid-20s. Then, high 50s and low 60s, maybe even 70. We have lots of mid-20s, but no low-60s. This the first time I can remember wearing half long johns to rake leaves.

I. Our trees have an abundance of leaves this fall. The hard frost seemed to cause the maple leaves to stay on trees longer than usual.

J. All old liars are members of the octogenarian, or older club, but not all octogenarians are liars. This was told to me by Uben Haad, president.

K. I’m not sure the best team won the World Series of baseball. I am sure the team with the ability to play well under pressure won. The Nationals came from behind five times in separate games, including the seventh and final game, to beat the Astros.

L. We ran our of Halloween candy after 178 trick or treaters!
