You name it and it might appear in this week’s column—and that you can take to the bank!

According to the Medical Association, “People spent more money on doctors in 2017 than ever before.” We seniors know this to be most certainly true, as doctors are living better than ever (and so are we seniors!).

A new road was being built on the northwest side of Albert Lea leading to a major housing development. In building the road an occupied bald eagle’s nest was discovered next to where the road was being built. The road builders were very careful and did not interrupt Mom and Dad to be bald eagles. The road was built. Mom and Dad eagle were successful and the question became what to name the road. The answer was, “Eagle View Road.” Can you find the road? (Arlene and Virgil Thofson found the road.)

The earwigs are back in town. They have taken residence in our stand-alone U.S. mailbox. Per entomologist Alexander Knudson (bug man formerly of Albert Lea) the old wives’ tale of earwigs entering your ear is most certainly not true. Their being called earwigs was because of the old wives’ tale.

Genie and I attended the funeral service for Donovan Hauge. He and Camilla Songstad were married in June of 1963. We attended their wedding as Camilla was a classmate of Genie’s, graduating from Naeve Hospital School of Nursing the same year as Genie. Their son, Don Hauge, spoke after the service, doing a fantastic job.

Genie and I attended the funeral service for Phil Jenson at Central Freeborn Lutheran Church. Many moons ago, as innkeeper of the Holiday Inn, Phil helped me show a profit by steering Minnesota quarter horse business to the Holiday Inn of Albert Lea. When you could sell every room on a Sunday night, Phil was probably the reason.

Genie and I enjoyed the July 4th parade on July 3 in Albert Lea. As in previous years, we viewed the parade while sitting outside in front of Zion Lutheran Church. Zion sells hot dogs, chips, cookies, pop, etc., so it has become tradition to eat the evening meal there. As I’m getting our food LeAnn, the great Zion Lutheran Church secretary, asks if I’m aware of the new kid in town and his dog Jasper. She lets me know it took almost four years to get the new kid into Albert Lea.

By now, I’m really confused, and the other ladies running the Zion food stand are giving me the “you’re a dummy” look. LeAnn says that his installation date of July 15 made it official. About then a light bulb went off to bring me up to speed. Pastor Matthew Lehman (new pastor as of July 15 at Zion Lutheran Church in Albert Lea and new kid on the block with doggie, Jasper), welcome to Albert Lea.

The July 4th fireworks on Fountain Lake were excellent. We sat by the same couple from Lake Mills for the last three years as it ended just as the rain came down like last year.
