The other day my brother-in-law, Lynn, asked me if I wanted to ride with him to Lake Mills to buy a part for a tractor. On the way down there and again on the way back, he pointed out many places where he had either spotted wildlife or had hunted. We drove past the eagle’s nest that sits atop a tree a mile or so north of Emmons. The eagle was in the nest tending to its young. This is nature at its finest. On the way back, we took a different route, and he pointed out places where he had shot a big buck or had seen turkeys and other wildlife. This was “right down my ally” to use an old ism, I love to take drives in the country to look for wildlife. I do this a lot around our area, and I also love to do it when I am in Northern Minnesota.
Lynn, now, splits his time between Nome, Alaska and Minnesota. He reminds me a lot of a kid who has just seen his first deer or animal in the wild. To him, seeing wildlife never gets old and when he hunts or fishes, he gets excited about the experience, even if he doesn’t shoot or catch anything. He is what I would call a true outdoorsman in every sense of the word. He once told me, not too long ago, that in his wildlife adventures while in Alaska he has hunted, trapped and fished for almost every species of wildlife in his 20+years in Alaska. I know that when he comes to Minnesota it is for hunting and fishing. He loves bow hunting for whitetail deer and turkey and his wife, Margaret, says that she likes venison more than anything he brings to the table.
I was going to go to our cabin this past week but after I had loaded the truck, I became ill. I decided to stay home and luckily, I did because I got to watch my grandson, Dylan graduate from Indiana State University online. He lives in St. Cloud with his future bride Kloe. They drove to Indiana for the graduation ceremony. He attended ST. Cloud State for his first two years and then he got a chance to go to work for a construction company out of St. Cloud. He decided that making money was a good thing, so he enrolled online at Indiana State majoring in construction management. Doing online courses was a lot of work but in the end, it paid off. He has made everyone in the family very proud of him (especially grandpa and grandma).
Dylan loves to fish but with his job and school, he wasn’t able to get up to the cabin much in the last couple of years. I am looking forward to spending time at the cabin with him, Kloe and his dad this summer. We will fish hard and enjoy the time.
I have heard that the panfish are starting to bite in Fountain Lake so I may have to try a little fishing. I am going to attend the Governor’s Fishing Opener, once again. This year the opener will be in Mankato, at least, I won’t have to far to drive.
Until next time: I was not ablee to get up to the cabin as planned, due to illness. I .
